Year
10
In Year 10 the focus is very much on learning the skills required
to produce a high quality garment at GCSE level.
Pupils are taught about the properties of various fabrics and components,
and they learn about a number of new techniques on the sewing machines.
Students also learn new pattern-making skills such as batik and
tie-dye, along with seams, fastenings and stitch types. Although
some of the skills taught are similar to those encountered previously
, it is essential to ensure that the level of quality is much higher
than before. The GCSE work is much more challenging than that of
lower years, but it is undertaken with a view to preparation for
Year 11 when final projects must be completed, and revision for
exams is paramount.
There is also a requirement to complete one or two projects as examples
of the coursework which lies ahead. These include beach bags and
waistcoats. The projects are carried out in exactly the same way
as the GCSE projects in Year 11, and give the students a feel for
the rest of the course. Although the work is difficult, the techniques
learnt are crucial in creating a high quality product, which will
score highly at GCSE level.
