DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
GCSE DT: Product Design - Resistant Materials
Here is the project sheet for this year's Year 11 GCSE Major Project:
Major Project To be completed by 26th April 2005.
Designing
- Research: Use a variety of appropriate sources to gather, display
and explain relevant research information.
- Analysis: Analyse the function of the product to be made and the
research information gathered. Identify systems and sub-systems.
- Specification: Rewrite brief in more detail in light of information
gathered. Split into three parts. What the customer wants from the product,
what the designer must consider and what the manufacture must consider.
You must also consider packaging and points of sale and promotion.
- Ideas: Include a wide range of ideas as well as sketches with notes
on materials, construction and preferences.
- Development: Working drawings of chosen design. (CAD is expected).
Show details of construction and explain choices made. Cutting and component
list.
- Production Plan: A stage-by-stage description of how the product
will be made. State the tools to be used and how long processes will
take to ensure that deadlines are met. Don't forget to leave time for
sanding and painting, etc. Be prepared to modify your plan if you fall
behind or do overtime!
- Evaluation, Testing and Modification: Add notes evaluating your design
ideas in terms of your Brief and Specification. Record any testing done
or modifications made. Explain the reasons for any changes.
- Communication: Show as many skills as possible, for example, sketching,
technical drawing, CAD, Digital Photography, etc.
- Social and Environmental Issues: Try to evaluate the impact of your
product on the environment, if mass-produced.
- Industrial Practices: How would your product need to be modified for
Batch/Mass production?
Making
- Modifications/errors: Explain how you have managed to correct any
errors made or reasons for modifications.
- Use of Equipment: Make sure you mention any Health and Safety issues
in your production plan.
- Produce a completed Project: Plan carefully to ensure that deadlines
are met and completed work can be evaluated against the specification.
- Level of Accuracy and Finish: The product will be compared against
your working drawings. No working drawings or explanation of changes
will mean low marks!
- Quality Control: Outline in your production plan the quality control
checks you will need. Evaluate how successful these checks were in producing
a quality product.
Suggested deadlines:
Use the Gantt chart from the shared area to produce an overall project
plan. Complete all the sections up to Development by the end of September.
Spend October on detailed development. Start practical work after half
term.
Complete practical work by Easter.
Hand in folio work on 26th April 2005.
