Technology Food Key Stage 3 GCSE

FOOD TECHNOLOGY KS3

Year 7
Year 8
Year 9

In Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils are taught how to design and make simple recipes. They also get a good idea of the type of activities and assignments that they would be doing if they chose to continue with Food Technology in KS4.

It is part of the Key Stage 3 planning process for students to learn all the hygiene and safety rules for the Food Technology room. Then they research and design their dish, decide what ingredients are to be used, make their recipe and evaluate the results. Projects are as follows:

  • Year 7
    Novelty Chocolate Project
    Fruit Salad
    Cheesy Potato Bake

In Year 7 students begin by making novelty chocolates. For more details of this project go to the Novelty Chocolate Project Page

The second project, to make a fruit salad, is small and
relatively simple. Students decide which fruits will
be used and design how their fruit salad will look.
After the designing process the students have an
opportunity to create what they have designed.

The third project is to make a cheesy potato bake which is much more difficult than the first project. The students are required to mash potatoes and add various vegetables of their choice. As part of their project they will design the look and content of their cheesy topping and show how the whole cheesy potato bake will look. This will finally be made at the end of the project.

  • Year 8
    Pasta

In Year 8, students undertake a "pasta project". It begins with students tasting different pasta sauces, learning the names of different types of pasta and about how each type is made. The pasta which they sample is made by the teacher and each pupil is allowed to taste it. They are then asked to design a pasta dish of their own. This includes consideration of the look of their dish, which ingredients will go into their recipe and a drawing of a cross-section of how their pasta dish will look. After the designing process comes the making process, where pupils make the pasta dish they designed.

The next task involves each pupil working as part of a group. Each group must imagine that they are part of a pasta-selling company and must design a logo for their company and decide what sort of pasta they would be selling. Each company makes a different type. The members of each group then make their chosen pasta.

  • Year 9
    Bread
    A Healthy Meal

In Year 9 students undertake a bread-making project. This invovles finding out about how yeast works, looking at different types of bread and then designing and making their own.

    They also l
ook at the topic of Nutrition and Healthy Eating. They are asked to design and make a healthy meal of their choice. This might be low fat or low calorie, maybe for someone on a diet, or perhaps a non-meat meal or vegan option for a vegetarian. Pupils are required to do extensive research and thorough planning before embarking on the preparation of their chosen recipes.
