Higher Sports Leader Award (HSLA)

The Sports Leaders UK Level 3 Award in Higher Sports builds upon the leadership skills and experience gained through the Level 1 Award in Community Sports Leadership. This course gives students the opportunity to learn new skills, to work with specialist community groups, and is of value to all those who wish to further develop their coaching skills. As a nationally recognised qualification it is an excellent stepping stone to Higher/Further education or voluntary or paid work in the sports development, leisure management and sports coaching sectors.

Sports Leaders must be 18 years or older on completion of the award and it is preferable to have obtained the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Award in Community Sports Leadership prior to starting this award.

Throughout the course, learning takes place through practical experience as well as some (rather than through) written work.

Course content:

Unit 01 - Introduction to Higher Sports Leadership
Unit 02 - Sports leadership in the community
Unit 03 - Principles and practice for children in sport*
Unit 04 - Principles and practice for older people in sport*
Unit 05 - Principles and practice for people with a disability in sport*
Unit 06 - Understanding fitness and health in sport
Unit 07 - Dealing with first aid and emergency situations in sport
Unit 08 - Demonstration of higher sports leadership skills
Unit 09 - Organising and running a sports event
*optional - 2 out of the 3 must be chosen

Duration of the course:

The Level 3 Award in Higher Sports Leadership normally takes about 120 hours to complete, of which there are 90 hours of practical work and instruction, and 30 hours of voluntary leadership experience.

Sports Coach UK Workshops

The seven higher 'Leaders' continue to gather new knowledge and information, which should greatly impact upon their leadership skills. The Leaders have completed two Sports Coach UK workshops, good practice and child protection and working with disabled athletes.

A wheelchair tennis player who had played for Great Britain in the Paralympic Games in Athens in 2004 led the working with disabled athletes workshop.
The good practice and child protection workshop has brought the Leaders up to speed with current legislation and guidance on child protection issues. West Yorkshire Sport tutored the workshop.

Leeds City Council Life Saving tutored a recognised First Aid qualification that is a prerequisite of the HSLA course. All the leaders enjoyed this full day, learning many crucial and potentially life saving skills.

The HSLA students have to run a festival of sport as part of the course. The current aim is to host a number of students from our partner special school Milestones, and run mini tournaments in boccia and new age curling.

Away from school we currently have four of the leaders (David Brook, James Higgins, Matthew Green and Alex Threlfall) attending the Level 1 cricket Coaching Certificate here at Priesthorpe School. The course has been organised by the school and Leeds City Council Sports Development along with the ECB for local cricket clubs.

Chris Cokill and Christian Pattison are also on the verge of becoming qualified football referees having attended an extensive introductory course run by West Yorkshire County Football Association. They hope to referee some of our primary partner school soccer matches before the end of this season!

The leaders have also been helping Milestone students with their swimming at Armley Leisure Centre (even going in the water!), as well as assisting budding young cricketers from Victoria Park Special School at Headingley Cricket School.

As 'Step into Sport' leader hours of assistance/leadership and coaching are currently being volunteered with Pudsey Gateway Club, Farsley Cricket Club and Calverley United Football Club.

Well done!
