School Sport Partnerships (SSP)
A School Sport Partnership is a linked network of schools which
receives funding to enable the schools to enhance and increase sports
opportunities for all.
The funding pays for a Partnership Development Manager (PDM), School
Sport Co-ordinators (SSCos) for two days a week, and one teacher
from each primary school or special school to take the role of Primary
Link Teacher (PLT).
The overall objective of establishing this school sport infrastructure
is to support the attainment of national targets.
The national targets are to increase the percentage
of 5 - 16 years olds who spend a minimum of 2 hours per week on
high quality PE and School Sport.
The Leeds' target is to have 90% of children participating in 2
hours of PE and school sport per week by the end of 2008. In 2007,
Priesthorpe SSP achieved 90%, which is above the national average.
Our other main targets are:
- increasing and maintaining the number of children participating
in inter-school competition (in 2007, 50% of children represented
their school in sport);
- increasing the number of young people actively involved in sport
leadership (in 2007, 11% of young people were involved);
- increasing the number of children that make the transition from
school to community sport (in 2007, 30% of children took part
in a community sports activity with links to their school);
- identifying gifted and talented children and providing opportunities
for them to progress and reach their full potential.
