Special Needs Code Glossary Helping Pupils Staff SEN Policy

This information is designed to inform and increase awareness of the pupils at Priesthorpe who have Special Educational Needs. (See SEN Policy for definition).
This could mean that the child has difficulties with:
· All of the work in school.
· Reading, writing, number work or understanding information.
· Expressing themselves or understanding what others are saying.
· Making friends or relating to adults.
· Behaving properly in school.
· Organising themselves
· Some kind of sensory or physical needs which may affect them in school.

We need to be aware that any pupil admitted to Year 7 may have unidentified special educational needs and we should also recognise that children's special needs are on a continuum and may also change over time.

Although only a small proportion of children have needs severe enough to be officially recognised by a Statement, there are many children who need the curriculum differentiated in some way: we may need to adapt material or develop different strategies in the management of these pupils.

As outlined in the Special Needs Policy, provision for pupils with special educational needs is a matter for the school as a whole. All teachers are teachers of pupils with special educational needs. Teaching such pupils is therefore a whole school responsibility, requiring a whole school approach.

Graduated Response.

In order to help pupils who have special educational needs we need to adopt a graduated response that includes a wide range of strategies. The Code of Practice requires us to make full use of available classroom and school resources. Pupils for whom remedies and support will be found within the school will be on SCHOOL ACTION. If pupils continue to experience difficulties and may require us to bring in increasing specialist expertise from external agencies like the Special Services, PRU etc. then these pupils will be on SCHOOL ACTION PLUS.

In many cases the action taken at each stage may mean that the pupil's needs are resolved. Only for these pupils whose progress continues to cause concern should additional action be taken. Any intervention should be designed to help pupils towards independent learning.

Pupils will be included on our special needs register at either of the following stages:
· Statements.
· Stage 4 (Any pupil waiting assessment for a statement)
· School Action Plus
· School Action.

Some pupils are also funded through Funding for Inclusion. This will evaluate all pupils by the category and degree of special needs.
