Sociology

Welcome to the Sociology Department at Priesthorpe. One question I'm asked quite frequently is 'Exactly what is Sociology?' Well…….

Sociology is the study of society and it looks at how people live, behave and work together in groups. It also asks questions about the world that we live in, and attempts to offer explanations to help us understand why it is the way it is.

Sociologists ask questions like:-

What impact does the FAMILY have on individuals?
Why do some groups do better in EDUCATION than others?
Why do some people commit more CRIME than others?
What influence does RELIGION have on our lives?

You will learn about research and how sociologists have tried to answer such questions.

Sociology teaches you to question the world around you. You will learn how to evaluate these studies and theories, you will develop your essay technique and will learn how to analyse information. It is a subject accepted by FE, HE and employers alike. Students of Sociology go onto a diverse range of careers. Sociology is useful for jobs in the media, such as researchers and journalists, for teaching and lecturing, and for Police work, Social work and health care, the list is endless.

Sociology is available at GCSE level, AS level and A2.
