Welcome to the OLC BHM Page

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
OCTOBER

The Open Learning Centre is celebrating Black History Month.

WHY OCTOBER?
October is significant within the African Cultural calendar; the period of the Autumn Equinox in Africa is consecrated as the harvest period, the period of plenty, the period of the Yam festivals.

Apart from that, October is a period of tolerance and reconciliation in Africa: it is a period of the coming together of the various bodies that entailed the African societies, the Kingdoms.

Since we have only three weeks of October in school we have decided to split our Black History Month display into three sections; each week a new dimension will be added.

Week 1 : 'Celebrating The Arts'

A timeline dating from the 1700s to the present day, pinpointing some famous black artists, singers, photographers and writers/poets, together with examples of their work.

  • There is also a display of books by famous black authors which we have in the Library.

Why not sample some of the books that are on offer?

Week 2: Celebrating Black Scientists and Inventors

A history of Black Scientists and Inventors and the discoveries they made which affect our lives today.

Week 3: Celebrating Black People who have changed the World

Looking through history at those people who dared to stand and be counted and how they influenced our thinking.
