Message from Mr Hall

Once again, the Examination Season is in full swing. Year 9 SATs were two weeks ago and we were quickly into GCSEs and A levels. In fact several of the big examinations now take place before half term.

We wish all our youngsters success and remind all concerned that the school is here to help advise youngsters (and their parents) about preparation for examinations.
I think the most important help a parent can give is in helping students organise themselves. Consider:

  • Do they know the timings of examinations and what they can expect in them?
  • Do they have the right equipment?
  • Are they getting the work / life balance right?

As a parent myself, I know that this is a stressful time for families. We all want our youngsters to have the best of chances.

Uniform
In the last Newsletter, I mentioned school uniform.

Please remember that the rule is ‘black shoes’. Black trainers, or trainer style shoes, are not acceptable. Also, the only pullovers/sweatshirts that should be worn in school are the official ones – we do offer three options here, so students can express their own preference.

I am proposing that, as from 1st September, all pupils should wear an official school ‘top’ over their polo shirt. Of course during hot weather, students would be given permission to remove their pullover/sweatshirt.

School Meals
The canteen operates a split lunch system. Year groups alternate on whether they are on ‘first lunch’ or ‘second lunch’. The canteen tries to ensure there is equal choice at the start of each lunch.

It is difficult for the canteen staff to estimate meal numbers; the school meal take up does vary from day to day. However, they have a responsibility to ensure food is available to all students who require lunch.

I often take my own lunch at the end of the second session, meaning I can monitor choice and quality. If a pupil feels there is not an adequate choice they should ask the staff to make up a meal—a salad, sandwich or pasta dish can be provided. If your child is unclear about this, please contact their Head of Year.
