PRIESTHORPE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2008

In this issue:

Message from Mr Hall

The Easter Holiday we are approaching will be the longest for several years. The combination of an early Easter, with term ending on Thursday, and two training days in April means that students will have a continuous break of 19 days.

You might have followed media reports about different school term dates - Wakefield are already on their break - Durham doesn’t break until the week Leeds schools return. Whatever your views on this, I hope that the long holiday is of benefit to you and your family.

I ask that, on returning to school, students pay particular attention to a number of issues of concern to us:

Uniform - Please remember that the rule is ‘black shoes’. Black trainers, or trainer-style shoes, are not acceptable. Also, the only pullovers/sweatshirts that should be worn in school are the official ones - we do offer three options here, so students can express their own preference.

Mobile Phones - The use of these is not allowed in school. We do remove mobile phones from students if they do not observe this rule. Additionally we need to remind students that we cannot accept any responsibility for the security of mobile phones. We take a similar approach with iPods and MP3 players. The issues surrounding mobile phones are complex and I am happy to discuss them with any parent who has concerns regarding our stance.

A note to Parents - Later in this newsletter, we mark the success of a number of our students in sport. Of course, in addition to the talent these young people possess, the encouragement, interest and support of their families is crucial. The same is true for academic success, as many parents realise - a child’s chances of success are increased if they are supported at home. The school can give guidance on this. We list below some tips for exam success - I hope you find them useful.

Revision Advice
  • On-line resources can be very useful. The school subscribes to two web sites.
These are SAMLearning and LearnPremium. For further details, click here.

  • Encourage your son/daughter to plan their revision.

  • Help them to produce revision cards of topics within subjects.

  • Make sure your child attends any extra revision sessions provided by staff.
A letter will be going out to all Year 11 students at the start of next term with further advice on pre-exam preparation.
