Leeds Sports Hall Athletics Finals 2008

YEARS 7/8

Priesthorpe qualified for the final of this competition by winning their heat last November at Priesthorpe. In the final they were up against some tough competition. Winners from all corners of Leeds attended, including Woodkirk, Boston Spa, David Young and Horsforth.

The team consisted of ten Year 7/8 girls and ten Year 7/8 boys. There were some very good performances, capped off with a winning performance from the Year 8 girls in the obstacle race.

At the half way point Priesthorpe were in second place, four points behind Horsforth with all to play for. The second half was close as the boys clawed their way back into contention, with the girls performing well in the field events. It seemed at one point as though we could get back in it, but Horsforth proved too strong and won by eight points, with Priesthorpe finishing a very creditable second out of all the high schools in Leeds.

Well done to all those who took part and let’s see if we can win it next year!

YEARS 9/10

The team consisted of twelve year 9/10 girls and boys, a smaller team than was required but quality is better than quantity, as was proved.
At the half way stage Priesthorpe were in joint last position with Boston Spa running away with it, but a storming display by the year 10 boys on the track and the girls in the field put Priesthorpe back in it.

By the time the results were announced, Priesthorpe had a 5 point lead and were City Champions for 2008. Well done to everyone who took part!

Is your son or daughter in Year 9 a future engineer or designer?

As you may have heard, one of our Upper-Sixth students has successfully applied to study Engineering at Oxford. If your son or daughter thinks Engineering at University might be for them there is an opportunity to try it out. They can attend a four-day residential course during the Easter holidays, from 25th – 28th March 2008 at Askham Bryan College, York.

The full cost of the course is £280, but the course is being sponsored by The Smallpeice Trust, which reduces the cost to £98 per student.

Cross Country Successes

Priesthorpe’s cross-country team have been producing some excellent performances of late, with the Year 10 girls taking centre stage. Chelsea Corrigan, Abi Morgan and Alex Bell are all consistently finishing in the top six and claiming team awards. The girls, along with Abi Ramsden recently claimed the Leeds Schools Championships title at Beckett Park.

All three Year 10 girls and Amy Sutcliffe will be representing Leeds in the County Championships next month, and all four have a great chance of making it to the Nationals.

In Year 11, Ryan Greaves made a successful return from injury by winning the Leeds Championship race very comfortably. Ryan is leading the way in Leeds at his age group and can hopefully continue this form.

Years 7/8 are also showing promising signs. Danny Manning had a superb run at Prince Henry's to finish third and Luke Cooper has been consistently finishing in the top three. Jamie Booth has been another good performer with several finishes in the top twenty.

Other competitors such as Jack Winstanley, Jamaal Lindo and Charlie Garmston have done well for the team. At the recent Leeds Championships race Year 7 raced along with Year 8 and Eddie Hardaker (Year 7) had a superb run finishing 11th with Luke Cooper (15th) and Jamie Booth (19th) close behind. Will Buck has also been running very consistently, finishing in the top 15 of the Year 8 boys every race.

The Year 7 girls are also running well with one year to go, and it is great to see so much interest. Katie Hall and Emily Yates have both had top 15 finishes; Rachel Bailey, Amelia Lewis Ogden, Lucy and Rebecca Airey have all contributed well to the team.

Well done to everyone who has raced so far this year!

Mr Hermann
