Training with the Kiwis!

The Year 8 Rugby squad had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on Wednesday 31st October to train with the Kiwi test team at John Charles Centre for Sport (JCCS).

The Year 8s have been participating in a development programme which has been set up by Leeds Rhinos, Leeds City Council Sport Development, Leeds and Hunslet School Rugby League and Priesthorpe School Sports Partnership. This has involved the Rhinos community coaches delivering high quality coaching sessions in PE lessons. The programme, which involves five other Leeds High Schools aims to increase the quality and quantity of, inter school rugby league.

The day at JCCS proved to be an outstanding success.
When the students first arrived they had the opportunity to have their photos taken with the players and collect autographs. The players then joined the students in impromptu games of rugby on the pitch. After the games sessions Year 8 were put through a series of drills by the Kiwi coaches. Finally there was a question and answer session with the coaching team.

The Priesthorpe students and staff - Mr Bowker was probably more excited than the students to get the opportunity to work alongside his heroes - had an excellent day and made the most of the opportunity to train with some of the best players and coaches in the world. The Kiwi staff commented on the high levels of skill, commitment and sportsmanship the Priesthorpe squad displayed.

Priesthorpe Gymnastics
The gymnastics club meets once a week at lunchtime and the students are coached by Sharon Gott. Over the last four years the team has taken part in the Partnership Inter-School displays and competitions.

Last year three students - Sam Haigh, Tanya Cooper and Lauren Cooper - represented Great Britain in the World Gymnaestrada in Austria. By giving up their own time both Sam and Tanya gained their coaching qualifications. We are very proud of all of them.

The team will be taking part in the next competition in December and would love to have a team kit in which to compete.

Molly Haigh (Year 10) is leading some fund raising events in the hope of raising £100 which will be used to purchase leotards. If anyone would like to sponsor the team or give a donation we would be very grateful. Please contact Mrs Green if you are able to help.

Holocaust Memorial Day Project

Theatre company Blah Blah Blah - an established professional company from Leeds - have been approached to perform at the Leeds Town Hall as part of the memorial day events on 21st January 2008. They have invited students from Priesthorpe to be part of this exciting opportunity.

The students from the Lower Sixth and Year 11 are working towards a performance that incorporates sound, design, movement and visual images to explore events from the Holocaust. This has involved our students interviewing Holocaust survivors and using the interview material as a basis for their work. The students’ responses to the process so far have been commendable and they have said how inspiring and thought provoking the project has been.

The Holocaust Memorial Day is open to members of the public and takes place on Sunday 27th Jan at Leeds Town Hall.

If you would like further information please contact Ms Morley.

'The Piano Man'
The Theatre company Blah Blah Blah visited school in November and performed the play ‘The Piano Man’ for our Year 10 ASDAN groups. The story is based on the true life events of a man who was found washed up on shore and had lost all his memory, apart from the fact that he remembered how to play the piano.

The groups thoroughly enjoyed the play and it has provided stimulating issues and themes that have been explored in follow up work, and this will form part of the course work to gain credits for their ASDAN qualification.
