Training Days Explained
The Government sets the school year as 195 days equivalent, of which 190 are ‘pupil days’. This means that all state schools have 5 ‘closure days’, using the time for training. (Although we understand that there is to be an extra training day this year, because of new performance management systems in schools).

Priesthorpe School is therefore closed on 5 occasions — on four of these training takes place on that day. The fifth day is used to add time to our early closures to provide 6 training sessions spread throughout the year. I know many parents ask why schools do not have common training days. Sometimes they are the same, but it is not possible to do this on all occasions because of the different needs of schools.

New School Day
All pupils and staff get 40 minutes for lunch, spread over 1 hour, to ease congestion. Each lesson is now 1 hour in length, so the school week is slightly longer than last year, even accounting for our occasional ‘early closures’.

Pupils should not arrive on site before 8.00am — after this time there are supervised areas (the canteen and the OLC), which can be used. All pupils should be on site by 8.40 am, as registration is at 8.45am.

BSF - Public Consultation
Pupils and parents will probably be aware of the £15m rebuild of Priesthorpe School. Work is due to start in the New Year, with completion by August 2009.

As part of the planning procedures, a Public Consultation event is scheduled for Wednesday 26th September in the Main Hall. We expect the event to commence at 6.00pm, but further details will be available shortly.

New Absence Procedures
All parents should now have received a letter explaining the new electronic system which we are implementing this term. This will automatically contact a nominated number in the event that a student is absent and request a reason for the absence.

The system may also be used to send messages regarding school closure, Parents’ Evenings, events etc. and to remind students of important deadlines.

We’re aiming to go live by the end of September and are busy making sure that all students’ contact details are up to date. Don’t forget to return your green slip to school as soon as possible so that we can send messages to the right number!

For further information please call Catherine Walters or Colwyn Toner on the school number.
