Dreams and Teams
As part of the British Council’s Dreams and Teams project. Priesthorpe has been twinned with Mqedandaba High in South Africa. In March Miss Metcalfe and I were invited to visit the school, where we received a welcome that we will never forget. Amongst complete poverty and near dereliction the sound of 800 voices singing as one on our arrival , both Zulu and gospel songs, and the look of complete joy and amazement on the children’s faces cannot accurately be portrayed here.

Since returning to school all year groups have had an assembly and the feedback from staff and students has been fantastic. Mqedandaba School has become the School Council’s main charity for the next academic year.

One of our biggest tasks in the short term is to raise enough funds to feed and water each of the ‘matric’ students prior to each of their final exams (about eight each). The vast majority of students walk a long way (up to 10km) to and from school without any breakfast. Many also go without any lunch. We are sure such a scheme will have a big impact on their exam performances. After all, if the students don’t pass they can’t leave school!

Fund raising is just one aspect of our links to our partner school but it is an important one. If any parent has business contacts in South Africa or could help us in terms of fund raising, sponsorship or shipping items then please contact either myself or Miss Metcalfe at school. Thanks already go to Frank Harrisons who donated polo shirts for the trip.

Year 10 Work Experience
Hopefully by now all parents of our Year 10 students are aware that their children will be taking part in the Work Experience fortnight which runs from 9th July until 19th July 2007 (the students are expected back in School on Friday 20th July for a short de-briefing).

Of the 213 students in Year 10, 143 have found their own work placements and 59 of them have had placements found for them using the Education Bradford Work Experience database. The remaining students have work organised for them by local colleges. These placements are now being vetted by Education Bradford and in the case of the ones booked direct from the database, these employers are being asked if they will take students from Priesthorpe. Some of the employers will turn down the students, not because of the students themselves, but often because they are no longer taking work experience students or because they have had too many already this year! All of these students will be found alternative placements. Before the students go out on their placements they will be given a form which needs to be signed by themselves, their parents and their employer. Once these signed documents are returned to school the students can attend their placement.

Some students will find that something they thought they wanted to do when they left school is something that they don't want to do after all, some may even get Saturday jobs or be invited back to apply for a job when they leave school. Overall the students should find this a very useful experience.
