PRIESTHORPE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2007

Art News
Last term students from Art Club entered a recycling competition where they had to create a sculpture made out of plastic drinking bottles.

Two groups won, and were invited to attend a workshop at The Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield for the day.

So 'well done' to Lauren Cooper, Megan Atack, Lily Preston, Olivia Warwick, Kim Walker and Holly Barker.

If you would like to attend Art Club, it runs on a Tuesday lunchtime for Years 7, 8 and 9, and after school on Mondays, Thursdays and Thursday lunchtimes for Years 10, 11, 12 and 13.

In Year 12, Laura Stephenson has been awarded a place on the prestigious Linfoot Harewood House summer school 2007. She will work with five artists and fifteen other sixth form students to put on an exhibition, talk to curators and run a business.

Bringing the Art Gallery to Priesthorpe
Leeds City Art Gallery is currently closed to the public to be refurbished. The grand opening is in May, and should be a big improvement, but until then we are left without access to the collection. As seeing work at first hand is an important part of the GCSE course, Amanda Phillips, the Gallery Education Officer, has solved the problem by coming to work with Year 10 students on their Myths and Legends project. She will be bringing slides and artefacts from the gallery in order to stimulate discussion and ideas.

Mixing the Arts at Leeds College of Art

Year 12 students Jaswinder Chauhan and Sanpreet Mahey went on a two day workshop at Leeds College of Art. Students created CD covers, T-shirts and animations using the excellent resources at the college and were inspired by music from different cultures. However, Sanpreet maintains the best part of the workshop was the motivational speaker Andrew Mohammud who got them started with their initial ideas.
