SIXTH FORM VISIT TO HAMBURG

From the 16th-19th March the entire AS German group visited the city of Hamburg in North Germany. We visited lots of places of interest in Hamburg including the Town Hall, the waxworks, the Hamburg dungeon, the 'Speicherstadt' and the zoo.

The Town Hall is an impressive old building with lots of beautiful paintings and sculptures. Famous German figures are sculpted in wax in the waxworks, including Michael Schumacher, Hitler, Steffi Graf and Gerhard Schroder. The Dungeon takes you on a fearful journey through Hamburg's history. Here you learn about how Hamburg has developed as a city with landmark events such as the plague epidemic and the Great Fire. The 'Speicherstadt' is one of the world's biggest warehouse locations for the storage of imports such as coffee, tea, cocoa and carpets. It was built at the end of the 19th century and is still running today.

We also visited Hamburger Dom - a massive funfair which is held in Hamburg three times a year. The fish market is a traditional attraction with not only fish but also lots of other items that can be purchased. We also tasted some of Germany's famous delicacies such as cheesecake, bread, ham and Bratwurst (German sausage).

Overall it was a very enjoyable trip. We had plenty of opportunities to use our German so it was a great learning experience. It also enabled us to find out about the culture of a German city which will be useful in the approaching exams.

YEAR TRIP TO SPAIN...
Earlier this term Miss Catena and Mrs Fraine took a group of Year 9 students to "Spain" for the morning. It was a great thing to do on a school day and we really enjoyed it. We went by coach, which didn't take too long, considering, and during the journey we prepared ourselves for a day of playing and working in Spanish. When we arrived we were welcomed and the order of the day was explained. We divided into groups and talked about ourselves with our Spanish team leader.

We went down to the market place and did some shopping as well as reading posters, listening to announcements and explaining what all these things meant. It was a real test of our language skills, and an ideal opportunity to learn new words and phrases. After our shopping we relaxed with hot chocolate and biscuits before turning to the computers to produce a PowerPoint presentation on our team leader about what we had bought at the different stalls and what we thought about the day.

We were unanimous in our opinion of it being really great fun, a much more interesting way of learning Spanish than sitting in a classroom in England! We were all very disappointed to have to come back soon, but it was important not to miss our afternoon lessons!

Our journey home was far too short. It didn't feel as if we'd come all the way back from Spain, but as if we'd just driven back from a Spanish workshop.

The venue was Allerton Grange High School on the other side of Leeds.

GOOD LUCK YEAR 11!
Year 11 seem to be on course to collect an impressive set of GCSE results this summer. I have been privileged to work with this group since they arrived at Priesthorpe in Year 7. They have grown up into an excellent set of young people. They have decided to have a leaving celebration, and have organised a Prom for 24th June. I hope this will be a delightful conclusion to what has been a very positive five years for most of these students (and for me!)
Mr Smith, Head of Year 11

YEAR 9 NEWSBOARD…
This term has been an exceptionally busy and important time for Year 9. It has seen the whole year group continue to support the running of the school by doing duty on Reception. All form groups played their part in launching the Health Challenge involving Years 7 and 9. They successfully launched the first Maths Healthy Eating Targets on 1st March and will be addressing Physical and Emotional Health before celebration days in July.

The RoAs went out to parents detailing the massive achievements of much of the Year Group. This was followed by careful consideration of Year 10 choices culminating in an impressive 80% turn out for the Parents' evening, a long but very productive evening for all. Many thanks go to all parents for their understanding during this busy time.

The Maths department held the first Booster Class last Saturday when over sixty Year 9 pupils spent the whole Study Day doing extra maths at their appropriate level. Both staff and pupils enjoyed the day and all pupils have to be congratulated on their mature and hard working approach to the day. They were a pleasure to be with.

Despite the busy time, four Year 9 pupils found the time to write, plan and rehearse an assembly which they presented to the Year Group this week. Hannah Fahy, Dean Patrick, Liam Crew and Joanne McKay held the year group spellbound for thirty minutes as they performed a meaningful assembly promoting the need to recognise and promote individual talents and abilities and to appreciate and use our own talents for the benefits of others.

We look forward to a successful Summer Term beginning with SATs and ending with preparation for Year 10.
Ms Ineson, Head of Year 9

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
BRADFORD MUSEUM OF FILM, PHOTOGRAPHY & TELEVISION
FUTURIST PROJECT

On Wednesday 22nd March Mrs Mumby took the following three Year 7 pupils to Bradford Museum of Photography, Film and Television - Hayley Kell 7CN, Shannon Dunnet 7J and Donna Grundy 7GO. The pupils had been selected because all three were producing very high levels of work in D&T and had applied effort throughout the year so far.
The day was packed with fun activities to develop their creativity and innovation in D&T.

The museum provided lunch and free entry into the IMAX Cinema to see Sharks in 3D.

At the end of the day it was announced that Priesthorpe had won the design quiz and both Mrs Mumby and the pupils all left with a memory stick each and some chocolate.

I think Hayley summed the trip up nicely by commenting that, 'This had been the best trip ever!'

FOOD TECHNOLOGY
The Food Technology Dept. was involved in the launch of Leeds' schools 'Be Healthy' campaign on Wednesday 1st March.

Form 9J made healthy fruit smoothies for a taste session in the dining hall at lunchtime. They made some very successful combinations of flavours for their smoothies which were very popular with the students who tasted them.

Year 7 pupils have been involved in producing International pasties for their design brief which was linked to the Design and Technology Africa Theme for this term. Here are some accounts from pupils about the work….

Our theme for Food Technology was to design and make some International pasties for the School canteen. We designed them on a Food Brief sheet and then we made the ones that we had designed. We designed one and that was our best so far then after that we designed an even better one yet! We made some puff and short crust. Before making our pasties we made the pastry and we made some jam tarts with the pastry that we had made. We also had a theme, which was to make the pasties with an African theme. Some of us used herbs and spices, while some of us used some African foods.

Some of the foods we have used:

  • Sweet corn
  • Pepper
  • Onion
  • Curry powder
  • Chilli powder
  • Yam
  • And many more

Katie Fahy 7WE

In the Food Technology Department Year 7 have created International Pasties. 7B/3 designed and planned how to make pasties from other countries using different shapes flavours and textures. 7B/3 has enjoyed how we used different spices to make sense of the fact that our pasty was from a different country. It made you feel like you were there in India or Africa. The taste of the pasties that we created made your mouth water because they were so delicious. I think everyone would love to create more pasties in the future. Thank you to Mrs Jennings for teaching us.
