DRAMA
ALICE IN WONDERLAND TRIP
In early February 2006, the Drama Club and Trinity Group went on
a trip to see Alice In Wonderland at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
They went with Mr Leggott, Miss Morley, Miss Gibbens and Mrs Housam.
Everyone was looking forward to the trip ever since it had been
mentioned in Drama club before Christmas. On the night of the performance,
everyone was really excited and trying to decide who they would
sit with on the way there, in the audience and on the way back.
During the performance there were lots of funny moments, great
costumes and even better sets and props. The lighting effects
were great, and worked well within the size of the stage.
Alice was a good actor, and the whole show was a lot more faithful
to the original book than the Disney movie. Some of the characters
from the film were not in the play, as the book didn't include
them.
The puppetry with Bill the Chimney Sweep, the White Rabbit and
the Dodo (when Alice goes to fetch the Rabbit's new fan and gloves)
was hilarious and the use of the changing scenery for the 'Drink
Me' bottles was really effective.
Although it was an enjoyable evening, there were things that
could have been improved. We spent the whole of the next Drama
Club discussing how we could have done it better!!
Despite this, everyone who went to see Alice In Wonderland thoroughly
enjoyed themselves and it was a great night out to have with friends.

YEAR 8 NETBALL
Year 8 Netball is now drawing to a close for another year. This
year we have continued to run two teams in Year 8 with both teams
being involved in two tournaments and the A team being part of
the Leeds Netball League. The girls have remained committed throughout
the season and have worked hard to improve their skills and performance.
The highlight of the season for the girls was the A team reaching
the semi-finals of the Leeds Tournament.
Congratulations to all the girls involved in Netball this year,
and I look forward to another enjoyable year with them when we
resume playing at the start of Year 9.
Miss Nicholas
Congratulations to all pupils selected as PE role models and,
in particular, Alice Thackray who has recently completed her FA
Foundation Level Reference Course.
CROSS - COUNTRY
LEEDS SCHOOLS CROSS-COUNTRY LEAGUE
The end of the season saw Priesthorpe teams finishing as follows:
Under 12 Boys 6th, Girls 4th. Under 13 Girls 3rd. Under 14 Boys
4th. Four Priesthorpe Runners ended the season in the Individual
Top Ten Rankings, with Amy Sutcliffe Under 12 8th. Under 13's
Alex Bell and Abi Morgan carried all before them to finish the
season in Gold and Silver medal positions, whilst Under 14's Ryan
Greaves ended the season in Gold medal position.
LEEDS CITY REPRESENTATIVES
Yet again a number of Priesthorpe Runners gained their 'City Colours'
representing the City at the County Schools Cross-Country Championships
in February, over a particularly tough Shipley course. So well
done to Alex Bell, Abi Morgan and Lily Preston in the Junior Girls,
Ryan Greaves Junior Boys, Alice Thackray Senior Girls, David Derbyshire
Senior Boys. Congratulations to all the six in keeping up the
Priesthorpe tradition of providing such a significant number of
the Leeds team.
COUNTY REPRESENTATIVES
As a result of their performances for Leeds Alex Bell and Alice
Thackray were selected to represent the County at the All England
Schools Cross-Country Championships at Mansfield in March. Alex
and Alice finished in superb positions of 88th and 127th respectively
from the 350-strong field. Our other four Runners in the County
Champs were selected as Reserves to the County team.
Alex Bell has once again been selected to represent the County
at the London Mini Marathon in April, with Lily Preston as Reserve.
Well done to all the above and to all the Runners who have turned
out for Priesthorpe over the last Season. Here's to 2006/7 when
the All England Schools Championships will be in Leeds. Now there's
a good target to aim towards.
INDOOR ATHLETICS
EUROPEAN INTER-CITY DORTMUND
Grace Christopher represented Leeds in this exciting competition
in superb facilities in Germany in March, turning in some excellent
performances in 60m, 60m Hurdles, Shot, Long Jump and Relays.
Our German Athletic Friends have already issued the invitation
for next year's competition in March 2007. In addition, as a result
of such linkups Eindhoven in the Netherlands has invited us to
come to a similar event outdoors in July 2007. Yet more targets
for Priesthorpe Athletes to get selected for the Leeds team next
year!
NATIONAL SPORTS HALL ATHLETICS FINALS
Thousands of Athletes have already taken part in the Sports Hall
Athletics County Finals and Regional Finals throughout the whole
of the UK! So it is especially pleasing to congratulate three
Priesthorpe Athletes who have already represented the County at
the Regional Finals, to be selected to represent the North East
Region at the National Finals in Birmingham on April 9th. Good
luck Abi Morgan and Grace Christopher, Under-13s, and Tanya Cooper
Under-15s
INTER-FORM INDOOR ATHLETICS AND LEEDS SCHOOLS
INDOOR ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
These various competitions are underway at present with a large
number of students representing their forms, and thence representing
Priesthorpe at the Indoor Athletic Arena. So well done to everyone!
Full results will be given in the next Newsletter.
UK ATHLETICS LEVEL 1 OFFICIALS COURSE
Thirteen Year 9 and 10 students took part in the above course
run by Priesthorpe at South Leeds Stadium. As part of the Priesthorpe
Inter-Form competitions and the Leeds Indoor Championships they
have been gaining very valuable firsthand experience of Officiating.
In fact a number of PE Colleagues from around the City have expressed
the view that at the Indoor Championships they have demonstrated
an excellent example to others (way beyond their years) of how
to conduct themselves in such roles!
LEEDS SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS AND
LEAGUE
The Leeds Championships/City Trials will take place at South Leeds
Stadium on the afternoon of 10th May. Quite apart from representing
Leeds this is the route to gaining City Colours to be selected
to represent the City at the County Championships in June, and
thereby to the National Finals in July in Gateshead.
The League will start on 16th May in its usual format as an after
School activity at South Leeds.
The PE Staff are already looking to see who might represent Priesthorpe
in these two prestigious competitions. Recently in Athletics Weekly
(the Sports mouthpiece) the Leeds Schools Athletics Association
was credited as being the largest and most diverse of its type
in the Country.
The Department wants the largest teams possible representing
Priesthorpe throughout the coming season, so speak to any department
staff and watch out for the training session timings in the Bulletin.
CYCLING
British Cycling has invited Priesthorpe to become a member of
its 'Go Riding' scheme, which aims to introduce as many young
people as possible to all the disciplines of Cycling (Road, Track,
BMX, Mountain Biking, & Cyclo-Cross). The driving force being
to make the most in every possible way of London 2012 and beyond!
The first time we will see this demonstrated is in late May when
some Year 9's pupils will have their chance to show their potential
and 'bottle' for hard work, when the British Cycling Coaches visit
for a series of training sessions in PE.
We hope by the time of the next Newsletter to announce yet further
exciting developments in this activity.
CLIMBING
Some after-School trips to local Crags are planned, so you need
to get warmed - up on the Priesthorpe Wall before hand on Wednesdays
after school.
YEADON TARN
Sailing, Kayaking and Canoeing are taking place at Yeadon Tarn
in May on Thursdays after School for beginners and the more experienced.
Mr Robins
SKI TRIP
This year saw another successful Ski trip with a large group of
Year 10 pupils going to Muhlbach in Austria! The excellent conditions
made for some wonderful and exciting skiing and all were able
to develop their skiing ability!
I enjoyed it, I hope you did too, Year 10s?
