DECEMBER 2005

HISTORY IN ACTION

It has been a busy term in History with lots of excellent work being done by the students.

The Open Evening for next year's Year 7 was a particular success, with a Roman Banquet, World War Room, examples of superb work and role-playing all adding to the atmosphere. Representatives from most years made a fantastic contribution to the evening, especially the Year 7 Romans.

The Department would like to publicly thank pupils from 8H for bringing to life the court and wives of Henry VIII (aka Josh Hemadou). Also note that, although history has been unkind to Anne of Cleves, it is not as unkind as Cameron Crossley's portrayal of Henry's "Flanders Mare" (complete with wig, false teeth and Doc Martins!). Thanks to all who took part or visited.

The Sixth Form Open Evening was also an important event and it looks like we will be getting some excellent students taking A-level next year.

The Year 10 visits to Calverley Church were up to the usual high standard with regard to work and behaviour. We expect that the students will do well in this coursework.

The department would also like to name a few students who have worked hard over the term: Ben Battle 8H, Callum Foster 8H, Abbie Bennett 7CL, Hannah Fahy 9C, Mike Lee 8N, Alex Stirk 9G, Coral Burke 9Si and Shabana Habib 9G

We have welcomed into the department Miss Nudd from the University of Leeds, who will be with us until February. I am sure she will enjoy her time with us.

And for the season of goodwill......
Five Christmas facts from History:

  • The first Christmas card was designed in 1843
  • Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas between 1647 and 1660, as he believed such celebrations were immoral on the holiest day of the year
  • Christmas pudding originates from an old, Celtic dish known as 'frumenty'
  • December 25th was not celebrated as the birthday of Christ until AD440
  • In the nineteenth century, the Post Office would deliver cards on Christmas morning.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE!
