PRIESTHORPE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2005

Dear Parents,

Short but hectic perhaps best describes the term which finishes next week. It's been an interesting period, made more so by the first sustained snowfall for many years. Thank you for your support and understanding. We take decisions whether to close or whether to remain open only after careful thought, and the health and safety of pupils and staff is paramount in our thinking.

Our communication system via Radio Leeds and Radio Aire, by our own website and by the prompt answering of the phone, worked well. The phone was in constant use between 6.30am and 8.30am, and we have two lines into school.

You will appreciate that our answer to the question 'Is the school open?' will be short and sweet as we know hundreds will be calling. If you have access to the website please use it. Mr Heslop and I take a very early decision and a message is placed by 6.00am. This message will always be on the home page, and it is important that you access the latest version; to check how to do this, click here.

We maintained an excellent attendance record throughout the period. If school is open it is essential that you make every effort to get your child here. On the worst day we had a Year 10 Science exam and only five students out of 200 didn't make it. Most of those five were ill. Well done Year 10!

Comic Relief

Comic Relief will be supported with a No School Uniform Day on Friday 11th March. It is important that the day is not abused by inappropriate dress. The staff have been asked to dress in red this year so perhaps your child could support that theme. As always we will ask for a donation of £1.00.

Year 9 Parents' Evening

Year 9 parents will be aware that there is a Parents' Evening on Tuesday 15th March. This is an important evening prior to the cohort choosing their courses for Years 10 and 11. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

Mr Hardaker and Mr Goldthorp have read and commented on all 215 Records of Achievement. They have both stated what a pleasure it was to read the positive comments written about the vast majority of the year.

It is a very important time for Year 9 as SATS are only two months away. No holidays should be taken by Year 9 during early May.

Holidays

We break up on Friday 18th March. We will finish school at the normal time. Monday 4th April is a training day and so students re-start on the Tuesday.

As always, please get in touch if there are matters you need to discuss.

Yours sincerely,
Clive Pickles
Headteacher
