PE
Our Year 11 Junior Sports Leadership Group will be leading Year 6 pupils from Bolton Royd in four PE lessons next term. Pupils have been learning how to lead small sport sessions and are looking forward to putting their new found skills into action. Year 6 pupils will experience sessions in Cricket, Rounders, Softball, Benchball, Football and Hockey.

I have been teaching dance at Pudsey Bolton Royd school since September to both Yr 6 classes.

Netball Team
Year 8 are a very keen group of students. They have only played three games so far but there are lots more to come in the new year, so keep training hard!

Thirteen Year 11 students continue to volunteer for the Gateways Adult Club on Thursday evenings. For just under a year the pupils have given up their time to help these adults with learning disabilities.
Miss Metcalfe

Mini Soccer Festival
After nine sessions of training sixteen Year 11 students have passed the FA qualification by running a mini-soccer festival for all seven Year 7 forms. An excellent afternoon in atrocious weather conditions culminated in 7F being crowned as champions. Well done to Years 7 and 11!

Year 13 New Course in Higher Sport Leadership
All seven students have become qualified Badminton Coaches having passed their Level One awards.

Well done to David Brook, Alex Guy, James Higgins, Chris Cokill, Alex Threlfall, Matthew Green and Christian Pattison.

Year 9 Soccer
Our students have made an encouraging start to the year winning their League Cup group, qualifying for the Quarter Final and being placed in Division One for the League programme.
The boys have also won through to the next rounds of the Aire/Wharfe and Leeds Cups.
Just one defeat in the English Schools Cup to Royds 1-0. Well done lads. Keep up the good work!
Mr Goldthorp

Yr 7 Netball
Year 7 netball club has taken off very well with an average of twenty-two girls attending regularly. I have seen a significant improvement in the girls' skills during the term. So far the Year 7 girls have had six matches and have played well and shown commitment in each. The girls are now beginning to apply the necessary rules and tactics to be successful. To date the girls have won two matches, drawn one match and lost three matches.

We are looking forward to matches in the new year against Woodhouse Grove, Leeds Girls' High School and St Mary's - these will be a challenge which I am sure the girls will rise to!
Miss Nicholas

Athletics
This year several new activities will be taking place, so a close watch needs to be kept on the 'Bulletin of the Day' and 'Assembly Notices'.

Sports Hall Athletics
The West Yorkshire Sports Hall Athletics Championships will take place on Sunday January 16th at Richard Dunn Sports Centre. This is a pre entry competition and entries have to be in to the organisers by Wednesday 12th January at the latest. Entry form and details are available from Mr Waddington, Mr Robins or Miss Cronshaw.

This event acts as the trial for the West Yorkshire Team to compete in the North East of England Championships in February. Last year the West Yorkshire Team went on to represent the North East at the National Final and was dominated by Leeds Athletes. So lets hope some Priesthorpe Athletes are amongst the team. The two age groups for Boys & Girls are U13 (Years 7 & 8) and U15 (Years 9 & 10).

Inter-Form Sports Hall Athletics
Prior to the West Yorkshire events a series of Inter-Form events will take place after school in January.

Leeds Schools High School Indoor Athletics Championships
This year Leeds Schools will hold their first Indoor Championships at the new Indoor Athletics facility at South Leeds. It is believed to be a first for anywhere in the country! It will be just for Years 7 and 8 on 22nd February and 1st March. See notice boards, Mr Waddington or Miss Cronshaw for details.

West Yorkshire Schools AA Coaching Sessions
As part of a 'Combined Events' initiative coaching/training sessions will be available in the New Year. So any budding Dean Maceys, Kelly Southerns or Denise Lewis's step forward! We are also looking for help in events like shot, pole vault or sprints.

Golden Mile
All Years 7 and 8 should now have their record card from their Form Tutor. The miles should have been started to be recorded on your cards and Form room recording sheet. The Bronze Certificates will be with us shortly for presentation in assemblies - cost 50p each (10 miles). Remember you can record any miles in school, to and from school, or from home as a walk, power walking, jog or run! If any other years want Record cards see Mr Robins. Parents can join in too!
10 miles earns a Bronze certificate, you get a Silver certificate for 25 miles and 50 miles will get you a Gold certificate.

Climbing
A large number of climbers from all years have been 'up the Priesthorpe wall' on Monday nights. Danny Hazel Year 7 has now done the majority of current routes on the wall. No one else has managed that for a number of years. Danny has also managed the Mars Bar Challenge several times - traversing right across the wall at low level. Any one else to follow in his footsteps?
Next term the group will be getting ready to hit Armscliff and Caley Crags.

Sailing
Jon Steward, Year 11, has enabled a number of Year 11 to have a basic introduction to sailing at Yeadon Tarn. Well done Jon!

Yeadon Tarn Developments
Work is progressing well with the refurbishment at Yeadon Tarn and should be completed by Easter. As a result 'Off-Road Biking' will be based at school whilst work is completed.
Mr Robins

Kayakers
We wish to say well done to Andy Renwick and Sam Brown. They have improved so much that they now paddle at Intermediate level with Leeds Canoe Club. They both entered the West Tanfield Slalom event in late September for the first time and both did exceptionally well, Sam winning Division 4 and Andy winning the Junior 16's in the same Division. This is a fantastic Achievement by both. Leeds Canoe Club also presented them with a Most Improved Junior Paddlers award last week. The competition is strong so they have done well there too. Another of our students in Year 8, Jake Myers, has also won an award and is developing into a very competent paddler. It is a pleasure to work with these students in and out of school.
Training sessions with Leeds Canoe Club will again start at the end of January; Thursday nights at Armley baths. Full details from Mrs Gray or Mr Robins

PASTORAL MATTERS

HEALTHY SCHOOLS INITIATIVE

Priesthorpe is currently working towards the Healthy Schools level 3 standards. Several initiatives and projects are helping to raise our students' awareness in achieving a healthy lifestyle.

A growing concern is the type of food choices which a large number of students are making, particularly at lunchtime. Healthy options are always available but take up is low.

As part of the Healthy Schools Initiative, the catering service will serve chips on only a few days per week. The 'chip free' day will be randomly selected to encourage students to choose healthier alternatives. To further encourage and maintain healthy eating. Students making healthy choices will be awarded a voucher at the cashpoint. These vouchers will be entered into a weekly draw and there will be three winners, to receive £3, £2 and £1 prizes. Certain dishes will be designated 'Voucher Value' foods and rewards can be collected on any day except 'chip free'.

I hope you, as parents, will support us in this initiative and encourage your child to choose the healthy options.

WORK EXPERIENCE
As part of my school course I go on a one day a week work experience at Virgin Megastore.

I've got to say working there is wicked, because I get to meet famous people. At the start I didn't know anybody but when I got there the people were nice. The first people from Virgin to say, "Hello!" to me were Kathryn, Sophie and Suzie who are sales assistants and they are proper nice.

I also got to meet Jay Sean and I am going to see him again. My favourite bit was when I didn't have to queue up to see Jay Sean. I just saw him in the staff room.

I'm still working there and I'm going to stay there hopefully when I turn 16. I hope to have a permanent part time job.
