HISTORY

Year 13 have had Leeds Metropolitan University in to talk to would be Historians about studying for a History degree.

On 30th November Leeds Metropolitan University's History department are giving Year 13 a talk on Victorian shock issues - Death, Disease, Poverty, Murder etc.

Year 9's Calverley Church visits have been completed. We took over eighty pupils on two field visits, looking for evidence of how old the church is and how it has changed over the ages. There were some superb efforts as usual. Much use was made of our digital cameras and ICT!

Clever Ben Waller discovered a blocked up window behind the clock tower which Mrs Hart had never seen before. (We've only been going since 1987!!).

Miss Lewis has been covering for Mrs Boulter's maternity leave. However, she is leaving at Christmas as she has secured a permanent job teaching History at a school in Guisborough, North Yorkshire. Miss Lewis has been an excellent member of the department. We thank her for all her hard work and we wish her well. Mrs Boulter is returning from her maternity leave in Feb 2005 - Mr Doody will be covering Mrs Boulter's timetable until she comes back.

We would also like to welcome Mr Josephson who is a History student from Leeds University. He is with us until the end of January.

KEY STAGE 3 INTERVENTION
During the term a new initiative has been implemented within Key Stage 3. Key Stage 3 Intervention involves pupils who are achieving slightly below the national average for their year group having extra support in English, Maths and Science in order to help them to progress to the next level. The three members of staff who have responsibility for the programme are Mrs Rauni, Ms Sloan and Mrs Harold. We look forward to monitoring the impact of the work carried out in the New Year.

MATHEMATICS
Whole school events
Students will have the opportunity to enter the UK MATHEMATICS National competitions at certain times of the year. Year 13 students did Priesthorpe proud by attaining Bronze status in the Senior division. The Intermediate and Junior division will take place in the new year. We are planning to enter a team for the whole school division later in the school year.

We also have a 'Fun Maths' puzzle of the week and response has been very good with lots of correct entries. We select a prizewinner each week.

As usual we will be having a SUMS week (Subjects Use Maths), where lots of mathematical activities will be taking place throughout subject areas including; quizzes, puzzles, investigations and a maths trail.

Primary Links
Members of the Mathematics department will soon be making the first of several visits to their 'link' primary schools. These are to help build relationships with feeder schools and help the transition from Year 6 to Year 7, with the emphasis on how their lessons differ from secondary lessons and where we can build on similarities.
The Year 7 Maths Challenge Mentoring programme is up and running with help from Teaching Assistants and some excellent Year 12 volunteers. The programme is helping to promote confidence and good practice in mathematics in our Year 7 students.

Year 8 are taking part in the NSPCC NUMBER DAY this month by doing a 'Sponsored Arithmagons' lesson in order to raise money for this worthy cause.

Mrs Burhouse will also be taking several students to the 'Master Classes' at Leeds Metropolitan University. These give students the chance to take part in challenges and investigations with students from all over the Leeds authority.

Year 11 mocks are with us and extra-curricular revision classes have been operating for several weeks. These will also be available for the summer examinations.
