PRIESTHORPE SPORTS COLLEGE
It's great to be back in the swing of things now that the hectic start is over. The PE staff are offering a range of activities for all ages. Pupils should check the wall chart given to their tutors. This half term there are competing teams in Rugby, Football, Netball and Cross-country. We have clubs at lunchtime and after school in Canoeing, Climbing, Badminton, Girls Football and Rugby, Trampolining, Dance, Fitness and the new Year 7 Games Club. There are many new opportunities for your son/daughter to be involved in. Give them some encouragement and we shall get more out of our pupils by persuading them to be healthy and active.

YEAR 7 SPORTS LUNCH
This year we are trying new ways of helping students to achieve. On Wednesday lunchtimes Mr Barnes and the sixth form Sports Leaders are offering opportunities for Year 7 pupils to come and play games on the field (or in wet weather, the Sports Hall) to have a more enjoyable lunchtime. Pupils don't have to change; it's just for safe, active fun away from the busy playground. Bring some trainers and a good sporting attitude and be involved Year 7! We can play football, Touch Rugby or Rounders, whatever you like……

SPORTS SCIENCE
The GCSE and A level PE groups will have noticed a change in the way many of their lessons are being taught. The PE staff have been busy over the summer improving their computer skills. We are now using more multi-media presentations in our teaching. This is mainly due to our interactive whiteboard in the PE classroom. All the staff who use it have found it a real motivational tool and a great enhancement to teaching and learning. Come and see us in Room 33 on Open Evening.

PE STAFFING
Not only have we been learning but we have grown. New for this year we have Mr Waddington who is going to be taking the Year 11 Football and Rugby teams. As the year goes on we will see him become more involved in activities at Yeadon Tarn, as we develop our links and opportunities in Canoeing, Sailing and Mountain Biking.
We also have Mr Fraser who teaches at Priesthorpe, Wortley and Milestone. He teaches within our school partnership and is involved in improving links between secondary schools and links between KS2 and KS3.

Trampolining Club has started on Wednesday evenings after school until 4.30pm. All welcome!

Year 8 Netball team has begun to train on a Thursday after school.
Mr Barnes

Year 7 Football
The Year 7 football team have made an impressive start to the year. It was great to see over 30 students come to the first training sessions and the team began the season with a 7-1 win away to Farnley Park. Well done!!
Mr Hutson & Mr Naylor

8Si Champions!
Nearly every form in last year's Year 7 took part in an Interform Dance Competition and all the work paid off for 7Si. Sports Day was manic, it was a good atmosphere and the whole school took part. 7Si won again and we were the champions!

PASS CENTRE
We are delighted with our new PASS Centre in the new building (Drive Block). The facilities are greatly improved and include a new general office, classroom and separate mentoring room. We are linked (finally!) to the computer network and now have four PC's.
Year 7 pupils are already coming to the PASS Centre at lunchtime to play board games and catch up with homework.
New courses this year include:
· Circle time - Year 7 - The Transition Period
· Anger Management (all age groups)
· Cookery with Mrs Jennings and Mrs Rayner
· Woodwork with Mr Westmancoat
· Boosting self-esteem with Mrs Harrison.

BUSINESS STUDIES
Year 10 Business will be setting up a school shop selling basic stationery, school items, folders etc. Year 10 students will be responsible for running the shop, ordering stock and keeping the accounts. This is where you can go Year 7 to get your study kit up to date!

On Open Evening why not come and join the Coke Challenge and the crisp tasting? Can you tell the brand name from supermarket own label? Come and find out in the Business and Enterprise suite!

Young Enterprise is a feature of 6th Form study. All students in Year 12 have the opportunity to run their own business, taking on the role of a Director. The AVCE Business Studies group XTREME PRODUCTS will be selling shares on Open Evening.

In January the Advanced Business group will be attending the Marketing & Management Seminar in Disneyland, Paris, as part of their studies - a fantastic venue and experience.

WELL DONE YEAR 10!
I am very proud of the way Year 9 performed in the SATs. We all are in fact. They have achieved the best results Priesthorpe School have had. This is a tribute to their hard work, the expertise of their teachers and your support at home. They will need to continue to work hard and be well taught and supported because the next two years will see a lot of pressure put on them in terms of a much heavier workload, with increased homework and coursework deadlines. So far Year 10 teachers are commenting on how much more mature and committed their pupils seem to be. We also have a considerable number of students doing 'sandwich' type courses, making full use of the new guidelines that encourage a more vocational approach to education at Key Stage 4. I am looking forward to a successful and positive Year 10.
Mr I R Smith

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
Mrs Mumby plans to take a group of pupils down to the popular Clothes Show event at the NEC, Birmingham in December. 'Design and Technology Week' will be celebrated once again. We also hope to invite a real-life designer back into school to work with some of our pupils.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY
We are very fortunate to be teaching in new food rooms with excellent facilities. We believe in a 'Hands on' approach to teaching Food Technology and aim to involve pupils with food in most lessons.
Within the boundaries of the National Curriculum we aim to promote important knowledge and skills to enable pupils to make informed choices on healthy eating and nutrition. Food hygiene and safety is an important part of the work. We aim to make cooking fun and give pupils the knowledge and skills to produce healthy nutritious appetising products.

EXAMPLES OF TEXTILES TECHNOLOGY WORK PRODUCED SO FAR IN YEAR 7
This is a transition module from Year 6 to Year 7. Pupils have been asked to design and make a souvenir hand puppet for Tropical World at Roundhay. So far, pupils have analysed the brief, researched the theme and used this information to generate their puppet ideas.
Mrs Mumby

PRODUCT DESIGN
We are trying to build up an examples library of small domestic products to show how styles change and develop e.g. hairdryers. If you have any devices which no longer work or are redundant please send them into school if you think they may be of use. It would be useful if you could remember the year of purchase and purchase price. Thanks.
Mr Westmancoat
