RUGBY LEAGUE
The school rugby teams have really taken off this term with the input from Mr Bowker and Mr Ryder. We now have regular practices and games have been played across Years 7 to 9. Also, Priesthorpe have managed to get into the semi-final of the Year 8 Leeds Schools Rugby League cup. Well done to the Year 8 team, and all the best for the forthcoming semi-final.

Years 7 to 10 have all been entered into the 7s tournament in which we have played for three years. Our current Year 9 were Leeds Schools 7-a-side Champions when they played in Year 7.

YEAR 8
Congratulations for reaching Year 8 Rugby League Leeds Schools Semi-final.

SPONSORSHIP
We are very grateful to 'Frank Harrisons' who have sponsored Priesthorpe with a fantastic new Rugby League kit for the Year 7 & 8 teams. The gesture is most welcome and very much appreciated.

At this point we must say a big thank you to Hilts Electrical; they sponsored the Year 10 football team with a great new kit for their use.

If there are any other local companies that wish to sponsor a team at school then please contact us. We are always grateful and appreciate the input local companies can have in sponsoring successful grass-roots sport.

SOCCER

YEAR 8
Well done to the Year 8 Soccer players who have won their league comprehensively, winning all 10 games against Intake, Wortley, Farnley Park, Matthew Murray and Horsforth.

Since finishing as runners-up in the West Yorkshire Cup prior to Christmas, the boys have made good progress in the main cup, the Leeds Schools Don Revie Cup. They reached the semi-finals (away to St Mary's, Menston) as well as the same stage of the Airedale/Wharfedale Cup. Through winning the league a place in the semi-final of the Champion of Champions tournament has also been guaranteed.

Twenty matches and nineteen wins is testimony to another successful season. Three semi-finals will again dictate how successful the season really can be. Well done boys.
Squad:- Luke Jenkinson, John McCrae, Marcus Pattison, Jack Mitchell, Oliver Morgan, Andrew Kenyon, Luke Hunter, James Kemp, Robert Winn, Joe Greaves, Adam Timms, Ben Scherer, Chris Coates, Daniel Madzikanda, Matthew Benson.

YEAR 10
An excellent season from all players. The team is unbeaten, scoring 29 goals in 5 games. The excellent team spirit shone through against Grangefield away, in which two injuries reduced us to 9 players but the team worked superbly for each other as Priesthorpe came away 3-2 winners.

NETBALL

YEAR 8
The year 8 netball team have had a very disrupted season. Many of the team's games were cancelled owing to other schools failing to provide an opposition for us to play. The girls continued to train, when possible, and progressed very well in the tournament, held at Woodhouse Grove, at the end of the season. We finished third overall in our group, having beaten Fulneck but losing to Garforth (group winners) and Horsforth.

The season has finished and the girls are now looking forward to the forthcoming rounders season.

YEARS 9 & 10
Again this year both the Netball teams in Year 9 & 10 have had a dedicated group of pupils regularly attending practices and games! Despite not always winning all their games both teams have been continually enthusiastic and motivated to keep trying hard! Well done to all involved. Next year might be our year!Back to the top

DANCE/GYM
Priesthorpe gym Squad are taking part in the Leeds Schools Gymnastic Competition. The squad comprises: Michaela Johnstone, Sade Malyon, Rebecca Johnstone, Amy Powell, Tanya Cooper, Gemma Collies, Nia-Marie Jackson, Becky Chamberlain and Charlotte Priestley. The first round of the competition takes place at Kirkstall Leisure centre on 31st March between 4 and 6 p.m. The girls will be competing against Corpus Christi, Temple Moor and Rodillian.

The girls have been working hard on their routines since Christmas, practising on a Wednesday lunchtime and Friday after school. Hannah Brown and Hannah Midgley in year 10 have helped immensely in the build-up to the competition, and their help has been greatly appreciated by Miss Graham and the girls in the squad.

Year 8 Inter-form Dance has started again and the girls are working hard on their routines. The girls have had to pick a theme for their dances this time round and the first heats will take place after Easter. The entries are very diverse, ranging from Fame and Ricky Martin to Moulin Rouge and Thriller. It should be a very interesting competition - good luck to all those involved.

ART
As part of Excellence at Priesthorpe, some year 7, 8 and 9 students have taken part in one-day art workshops at schools in West Leeds. These have included workshops in painting, clay work, print-making and textiles. Ms Drabble ran the photography workshops held here at Priesthorpe.

Before Christmas a group of year 9 students visited the royal Armouries for the afternoon as an experience from which they could develop their ideas and skills with oil paint. The oil painting workshops are run by Miss Benson after school and the paintings the students make will be exhibited along with work by pupils from other schools in the West Leeds Wedge. The Wedge Exhibition will be at Crawshaw School on July 1st and 2nd.

VISITS
Despite the paperwork involved these days in planning even the shortest visit during the school day, staff have continued to extend the education on offer with a superb range of extra-curricular activities. They include 'Bombay Dreams' in London, ski trips to France and Austria, theatre visits to 'Blood Brothers', trips to art galleries, local companies, fieldwork on the North York moors, local specialist libraries, competitions, revision conferences …the list goes on. Thanks to parents for ensuring the paperwork came back to us in good order and good time - it really does help.

We have had a number of visitors to us here, including an up-and-coming pop star, Keisha White, a theatre group who performed with the whole of year 9 as part of our support for their SATS and a Careers Fair for our year 11 leavers.

SPANISH
21 of our year 9 students visited the City learning Centre, based at Allerton Grange School, to take part in a series of activities to improve their spoken Spanish. They worked in pairs, accompanied by their own native speaker and the afternoon was spent shopping at a virtual Spanish market and finding out information from advertisements and tannoy announcements. The students then put together their own Powerpoint presentation based on their work.

The students worked extremely hard throughout the afternoon and, although they left feeling exhausted after speaking and listening to Spanish for 3 hours, everybody agreed it had been a very enjoyable and useful experience indeed.
