CURRICULUM NEWS
TECHNOLOGY

As part of their work in Citizenship, Year 7 pupils raised money for the Sight Savers charity by baking biscuits to sell at break. They raised £125.50!

In the Transition Module in Design Technology Year 7 pupils have designed and made a chocolate novelty suitable for sale at Tropical World in Roundhay. An excellent standard of work was achieved by many students. The following articles are just a small example of the work achieved:

This term we have been concentrating on different kinds of chocolate, which ingredients are in chocolate and what is the best way of melting chocolate.
First lesson We looked at the different kinds and flavours of chocolate and then we wrote down what we thought about the chocolate (I liked the white chocolate best).
Second lesson We looked at different chocolate novelties - we looked at the shape of them, the size of them and we looked to see if it was just as good or better quality (I brought a Fredo bar in).
Third lesson We looked at different types of melting chocolate - the bain-marie, the pot and pan and the microwave (I thought the microwave was best).
Fourth lesson We started looking at what chocolate we would use such as dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate (I thought the white chocolate was best).
Fifth lesson We started to melt the chocolate we chose and put it in the mould we had made in DT. (I used the white chocolate for my chocolate novelty).
Last lesson We all evaluated our chocolate novelty such as looking at what we could change about it and questions like that (mine wasn't so good because I heated it for too long so it got cream spots on the back when it should have been all white).

Year 7 Amaze With Brilliant Chocolate Bugs!
The new Year 7 classes at Priesthorpe School stunned their cookery teachers by producing some excellent chocolate bugs, lizards and other things to do with their project on Tropical World in Leeds. Their task was to make a chocolate souvenir for the attraction. Mrs Jennings said this to me when I asked her how she felt about the fabulous choccies 'I think that the Year 7's have done very well as this is their first ever project in their CDT lesson.'
In this project they learnt different ways to melt chocolate and what different types of chocolate had in them. So on the whole this project went very well.

Chocolate Mad!
The first half-term in CDT with Mrs Jennings was a blast! Our aim for the half-term was to create chocolate moulds and melt chocolate to put in them. Then we had to evaluate them. First we just worked on how we would evaluate them and discussed all the different types of chocolate and how to melt them. Then, to get used to evaluating food, we began by evaluating some scones. We learnt all the different words for evaluation like sweet, bitter etc. We then evaluated three different types of chocolate; dark, milk and white. After that we worked on melting the chocolate; pan and pot, bain-marie and the microwave. The microwave was the simplest but the bain-marie was probably the best. We put the chocolate that we melted in ready-made moulds.
A couple of weeks later, our moulds were ready and we had chosen our chocolate. To make our moulds we had a template and we used the vacuum former to make the plastic mould. We then melted the chocolate in one of the three methods and poured the melted chocolate into our moulds.
Finally, after the holidays we came back to our chocolate moulds and found out that our chocolate had settled well. We evaluated our chocolate with all the good evaluation words and took the chocolate and the chocolate moulds home.

GEOGRAPHY
Year 7 will shortly be preparing for TV weather forecasts. Year 8 students are now experts in flooding and there are some superb vulcanologists and seismologists in Year 9. GCSE students: revision sessions are coming up in the New Year - use them Year 11!
Also, we went 'out and about' during October. We led two successful trips to the North Yorkshire Moors for Year 11 GCSE students looking at the impact of tourism and were lucky enough to see an episode of Heartbeat being filmed!
Year 12 students also enjoyed an unusually rain-free field trip to the East Yorkshire Coast in November!

PASS CENTRE

Santa's Grotto Reward Scheme
Twenty pupils who are attached to the PASS Centre are on a special reward scheme in the build up to Christmas. Mr Jenkins and Mrs Wolfenden, our Learning Mentors, are closely monitoring their attendance, punctuality, politeness, behaviour and work each day. Each pupil who manages to get 23-25 elves before Christmas will receive a gift voucher. Good luck to all who are taking part!

Good Progress in Maths
The PASS Centre Staff have been working this term in some Year 8 maths groups to help improve behaviour and attitude to work. Nearly all of the pupils in Mr Maund's set have now gained 10 stickers and will soon receive their good progress certificate in assembly. Well done, keep it up!

YEAR 10/11 DRAMA

Drama classes in Years 10 and 11 have been studying the effects of The Plague on the village of Eyam in Derbyshire in the 17th Century. When the outbreak was discussed the villages bravely chose to seal themselves off to prevent its spread to the surrounding neighbourhood. In just over a year three quarters of them died as a result of their selfless decision but the outbreak had been contained and local villages protected.

The following prayer was written by Sandeep Rai of 11N speaking in her role as the newly appointed rector of the stricken village. It is an example of the many excellent pieces of 'in-role writing' prepared and presented by the students on this subject:

The One above
Please bring me back to life
I just can't handle this
Everybody around me is leaving me
To join you in heaven
But where does this leave me?
All alone with nobody to turn to
Please Lord don't make me be last in line
But then again, what do I have to live for?
This wasn't the way things were meant to be
This wasn't the way I wanted to become Rector
It was a simple wish that I lost control of
Now everybody has turned the blame on me
And they all live to see me fail
How will I cope?
I need you Lord, please make me strong
I am in charge now
I have the power
Please free me from my sorrow
Let me be
Give me the strength to carry on
This is me
I am me
I will show you what I can be.

YOUNG WRITERS
Two of our students have won prizes in 'The Young Writers Zodiac Competition.' Their entries were selected on Merit and Distinction and were published in the book Zodiac West Yorkshire Vol 11. With over 40,000 poems to be considered selecting the best five for each publication was an onerous and time consuming task for the Editorial Team. We are pleased to announce that David Bentley (Year 13) & Iram Riaz (Year 10) were the chosen two. Congratulations to both of you!

BUSINESS STUDIES
Target 2.5 Competition
Four lower 6th AS level Business students with Mr Gibbons entered this prestigious competition on 21st November, delivering a Powerpoint presentation on what they felt the rate of interest should be, backing this up with business theory and knowledge of interest rates.
