SPORTS COLLEGE NEWS
Achievements
Sports College funding has paid for members of the Gateway Club (for the
disabled) to attend specialist coaching at the new South Leeds Indoor
Athletics stadium. Ginny Holroyd, who runs the Gateways Club, has written
to us to say how grateful they are for our help. She says, "The progress
made by individuals is fantastic. As a result of the coaching a team has
now been entered for the Disabled Olympics in Plymouth later this year."
We wish everyone involved the best of luck.
Staff Development
One of the Sports College objectives is to develop a programme of continuing
professional development for staff. Since September 2002 we have hosted
courses for training tutors to run the Community Sports Leaders Award
(CSLA), Speed, Agility, Quickness Programmes (SAQ's), Level 1 Football
Coaches Award and Sport Education/Toplink course. Miss Nicholas has attended
the British Trampoline Federation Teachers Award and Level 1 Football
Coaches Award.
Our PE Technician, Mr Thompson, is completing the Lawn Tennis
Association's Tennis Assistant course. Miss Graham has attended the Level
1 Football Coaching Award and Mr Robins will spend some of his Easter
holiday gaining his next qualifications in climbing and sailing.
Community Sports Officer
We are delighted that Rachel Enevoldson has been appointed as our new
Community Sports Officer. Rachel began her work at Priesthorpe on April
1st and will act as our link with local Sports Clubs.
Priesthorpe School Sports Forum
Any parents who are interested in becoming a member of the Priesthorpe
Sports Forum are welcome to contact Mrs Raper for information. The Forum
will aim to meet once a term to look at the developments initiated by
our Sports College funding. We wish to work closely with our partner schools
and local sports clubs and would like to hear the views of our parents
with regard to the future PE and Sports activities for all. Volunteers
to help with activities are always welcome. Throughout the next year we
hope to run many coaching courses for any adults other than teachers to
attend. If you are already involved in local teams or you are interested
in what's going on at Priesthorpe please contact Mrs Raper before May
1st.
PE
Visits & Events
Four Year 11 students visited Leeds Metropolitan University and were trained
on how to run a festival of sport for primary schools. Emma Smithers,
Kayleigh Bottomley, Danny Flannery and Chris Cokill are managing this
event for at least 10 primary schools in the summer term. This is a massive
commitment and I am sure one which all the pupils will benefit from. If
anyone knows any companies who may wish to sponsor the event in whatever
way please contact Emma or Kayleigh at the school. Parents and teachers
from all the schools taking part will be invited to watch.
Year 13 A level visit to LMU
The A level group visited the Carnegie site last term to take part in
a number of Sports Science experiments. We took part in fitness tests
examining what happens to the air we breathe during exercise and how we
respond. The equipment used was a big help in understanding some of our
course. The specialist University facilities are the best in the area
and it is great to have the opportunity to use them. Next year's group
will also have the opportunity to visit.
School Sports Co-ordinators
Staff from eighteen schools (including Priesthorpe, our partner Secondary
Schools and our feeder Primaries attended National training at Stanningley
Rugby Club. This was part of a six module course to develop curriculum
leaders in PE and was run by the Priesthorpe School Sports Co-ordinator
project.
Priesthorpe has also hosted an Activemark workshop which
ten feeder Primary schools attended to enable them to achieve the Activemark
Kitemark. This recognises excellent PE provision in Primary schools.
The Senior Netball team won their first match this season against Cardinal
Heenan. They played brilliantly and have been totally committed all season.
They are attending the Senior Netball Tournament shortly.
PE Curriculum News
It is pleasing to inform you of the range of activities we can now offer
in KS4. All pupils do PE as part of the National Curriculum. For the past
6 years we have offered GCSE to all our pupils. There are currently 41
aiming to take their GCSE this summer and another 45 for next summer.
We started a brand new course this year, the GCSE short course. This was
aimed at those pupils who would cope with taking an extra course and have
some interest in sport. It lasts for one year and I will be pleased to
explain the course to any Year 9 pupil or parent.
Finally, on top of the above courses, a first this year
will be to offer a 'Sport and Fitness' course and an 'Outdoor and Adventurous
Activities' course for small groups. The aim of these courses is to educate
pupils in different areas of study and to produce a portfolio of work
for assessment.
The breadth of courses in 'The World of Sport' at Priesthorpe is developing
well and we hope to offer a suitable course for pupils of any ability
with a range of interests.
Football Year 8 & 9
The football teams continue to play in our local league with some success.
At the time of writing we still have many games left to play. By the time
this article goes to homes the season will be nearly finished and we will
be looking towards publishing final League results.
Mr Barnes
Year 7 & 8 Girls Football
A group of approx. 12 girls have been involved in girls' football throughout
the season. They have been keen to practice each Monday lunchtime. So
far they have spent time developing their indoor 5-a-side skills and have
played 8 fixtures - results have varied - we were convincing winners against
Abbey Grange (7-1), and won at St Mary's Menston but had mixed results
against Grangefield and Horsforth. The girls will now begin to practise
outside in preparation for next season - we aim to play 8-a-side outdoor
fixtures from September onwards. I know there a lot of girls in Year 7
and 8 who are interested/talented footballers - some of whom have not
yet got involved in the school team. We are hoping that more girls will
join us in the coming months.

Year 7 Soccer
LEAGUE CHAMPIONS - 2 CUP FINALS - INTO THE PLAY-OFFS AND STILL UNBEATEN!
Played 19 won 19 is a fantastic record, and unique in my
time at Priesthorpe. Priesthorpe's large squad continues to excel in all
competitions becoming the first Priesthorpe side to reach a Leeds Schools
Cup Final since 1993 V St Mary's/ Boston Spa after a fine 2-0 home victory
against Mount St Mary's.
Another semi-final victory, this time 5-2 against local
rivals Crawshaw in the Airedale/Wharfedale Cup semi-final saw the boys
through to a local final against Pudsey Grangefield (provisional date
Tues 29th April at Bradford University).
Year 7 finished their league programme in style winning
their 12th and final league game against Lawnswood 5-0 to finish with
a full 36 points and the league championship - an outstanding achievement.
The talented squad have therefore qualified for the end
of the season Citywide Champion of Champions Play Offs (opponents as yet
unknown).
Even if the side doesn't win another game, season 2002/3
will live long in the memory. Mr Goldthorp's gamble of offering a full
McDonalds to all players if they stay unbeaten is looking an increasingly
shaky prospect!
Well done boys and thank you to all parents for their fantastic
support.
Mr Goldthorp
Year 11 Soccer
Priesthorpe returned to their end of season programme with the news that
local rivals Crawshaw and Pudsey Grangefield had disbanded their teams.
This gave Priesthorpe valuable league points and a surprise semi-final
'bye' through in the Airedale/Wharfedale Cup Final (to be arranged).
Form has recently been good with a solid 2-0 away victory
at Guiseley (who had beaten us at home) and an excellent 2-2 draw away
to fellow Sports College St Mary's, Menston.
A solid league position and a Cup Final are sound reward
for a hard working squad excellently led by Chris Cokill.
Mr Goldthorp
Year 7 - Leeds Schools 5-A-Side Champions
Priesthorpe entered two teams for the first time in this annual tournament
held at Woodkirk School. Both squads played well to qualify and reach
the finals night (30 teams entered)
Priesthorpe's 'A' team were eventually beaten in the quarter-final
on sudden death penalties leaving the unqualified 'B' team to march through
to the final and eventually beat local rivals Crawshaw.
An outstanding achievement led to a dramatic call up to
the YORKSHIRE FINALS DAY held at the BARNSLEY METRODOME.
Placed in a group of 7 team Priesthorpe continued to play
excellent attacking football combined with stern defence to win five out
of their six group matches and qualification for the semi-final (one win
away from the NATIONAL FINALS AT THE JJB STADIUM IN WIGAN).
A drawn game was the result in a very tight contest after
extra time. Penalties ensued (2-2 after five each). Sudden death penalties
brought a controversial end and heartbreak for the Year 7 boys.
A sad end to a fantastic day for Priesthorpe. Leeds Champions
and Yorkshire Runners Up - very well done!

Canoeing
Following negotiations with Leeds Canoe Club, a second group of students
have now started working with the clubs BCU (British Canoe Union) coaches
at Armley Baths on Thursday evenings. The group have been learning basic
skills in the 'warm' prior to transferring with the club to the River
Aire or with School to Yeadon Tarn on Thursday evenings. See Mrs Gray
or Mr Robins for further details.
Cross Country
With the season drawing to a close there are many team and individual
successes to report.
London Mini Marathon
Apart from Mr Hollis and Mr Hardaker doing the big boys race on Sunday,
Dave Derbyshire in Year 10 will be representing West Yorkshire Schools
in the Mini Marathon as part of the London Marathon. This is the 3rd year
West Yorkshire have been invited , and a huge honour for Dave. Watch your
TV's on Sunday morning!
English Schools Cross Country
This year's race at Brighton in early March saw three Priesthorpe runners
as part of the West Yorkshire Schools Team - the most Priesthorpe has
had at any one time. Dave Derbyshire, Inter Boys, and Danny Holah, Junior
Boys, ran with their usual 'gutsey' effort with Jack Mortimer being a
reserve.
As a result of West Yorkshire being the 5th overall team from 44 counties,
they will be invited to next years London Mini Marathon. A target for
Priesthorpe's runners next year!
English Schools Cross Country Cup
For the second year on the 'run' we had a Priesthorpe team representing
West Yorkshire in this team competition Regional Final. Dave Derbyshire,
Danny Holah, Blake King and Carl Binns were 2nd in the West Yorkshire
final. In the Regional Final in November in Lincoln they ran a superb
race with Dave finishing 2nd, the team being 4th from 16 teams, only to
miss the National Final by 5 points! Well done lads.
Leeds Schools Cross Country
A variable year teamwise, but some excellent individual results.
In Year 7, Claire Westerman and Rachel Marshall finished
in the first 15 individuals overall, with Liam Smith in the first 10 for
the boys. The Boys team gained Silver Medals, with any one of 7 schools
being the potential winners up to the last race. Phil Coates in Year 8
continued his rapid improvements over the season and a Leeds and County
vest must be his target for Year 9.
Danny Holah in Year 9 won both the League and Championship titles.
Dave Derbyshire won both the League and Championship titles.
Danny King was again in the first 6 individuals for the league.
Well done to everyone who turned out, we just need more consistent team
performances and more girls running next season.
Athletics
The Athletics League for Leeds Schools starts in early May so use those
Easter holidays to stretch those legs!
