| Leisure and Tourism Assigments Visits |

- Hollywood Bowl visit and talk by the manager on the marketing and promotion of the organisation (we also had a free hour's bowling!)
- Blackpool Pleasure Beach visits and talk. For the last two years our major assignment in Year 11 has used the Pleasure Beach as its focus. One of the managers has given a talk and then we couldn't go all that way and not use the rest of the visit to sample the delights of the facilities. Mr Goldthorpe loved the 'Big One' (not really).
- Leeds United Football Club are a major focus in Year 10 for Mr Hollis's
groups as he is a season ticket holder and they are a very good example
of a multi-million pound leisure and recreation company. The students have
had a tour of the ground and we were very lucky one year to meet the players
and the Assistant Manager on a European Cup day. A past player gave the
students the opportunity to show their skills by playing keepie ups in the
changing rooms. The tour guide gave the students plenty of information and
the opportunity to take digital images for them to use in their assignments.
- Temple Newsam House provided the venue for us to investigate a publicly-owned organisation. The house and gardens also franchised facilities that offer the students the chance to understand how the ownership organisations can be complex.
- Leeds Bradford Airport provided the location for a group of students to listen to some inputs from the travel industry by practitioners. Park Lane College Advanced students also gave our students some food for thought and encouraged them to think about the Further and Higher education opportunities in the industry.
- We investigated the local provision in Farsley and Pudsey by getting out and about and mapping the local area and its vast number of leisure and recreation facilities.
- Kirkstall Abbey and The Royal Armouries provide the focus for a couple
of heritage visits.
- Armley Sports Centre was the focus for sport and physical recreation. Students were aghast that even fuddy duddys of Mr Hollis' age were using the gym facilities. Applying for a Bodyline card was their activity as well as outlining the activities for people of different ages and Special Needs.
- McDonalds and KFC gave us customer service opportunities as well as greasy
chips. We were mystery shoppers, some more mysterious than others!
- Conducting a questionnaire in Pudsey Park was a big learning experience for some students, especially when all they really wanted to do was to go on the swings! Having confidence to approach a member of the public to help with a survey is not as easy as it looks when done by professionals.
- Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls visits excited some of our more sporty
students. The Bradford fans particularly enjoyed bumping into Robbie Paul
while we were up at Odsal.
These give you a brief taster of where we've been.
