  MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Welcome to the Priesthorpe Modern Foreign Languages Home Page. Here you will find links that will take you to other pages which contain further information on Spanish, German, French, Urdu and Panjabi.

At Priesthorpe pupils have the opportunity to study three European Languages and two Community Languages. All students study French or Spanish in Years 7, 8 and 9. In Year 9, able linguists start German as a second foreign language in addition to French or Spanish. At KS4 most students continue to study a foreign language to GCSE level, with an increasing number choosing to continue with two languages.

The Community Languages, Urdu and Panjabi, are also offered at KS3 as 'twilight sessions' and at KS4 as part of the normal curriculum.

A-level courses are always offered in French, Spanish and German.

Students are expected to work hard in all their Language lessons.
Trips and events are included as part of the curriculum, or as enhancement, wherever possible. Year 7 and 8 Spanish students may be invited to a Tapas restaurant, for example. Last year, a Year 10 group visited the celebrations for the Year of European Languages and Culture at Leeds University, where they tried food, watched films, learned a little of a new language, such as Japanese, watched news broadcasts from other countries and had a crash course in Salsa dancing! At the end of KS3, or the beginning of KS4, there is often the opportunity for pupils to participate in an exchange project. We have an ongoing and well-established exchange programme with the town of Soest in Germany. There are also chances to take part in language enhancement visits to other countries in Years 9, 10 or 11, depending on what is available. In the past three years we have run very successful trips, to Barcelona, Santander and Paris.
