Priesthorpe School, Pudsey, has achieved one of the 1,167 Arts
Council England Artsmark awards across the country, announced
today. In this fifth Artsmark round, 234 schools achieved Artsmark,
435 Artsmark Silver and 498 achieved Artsmark Gold status.
The Artsmark award recognises schools that demonstrate a commitment
to providing opportunities across all artforms from drama to music,
design to literature, dance to sculpture. The scheme also encourages
schools to work in partnership with artists and arts organisations.
The arts can transform lives and raise aspirations, and improving
opportunities for young people to engage with the arts, at school
and through extra-curricular activity, is a core priority for the
Arts Council.
Clive Pickles, Headteacher of Priesthorpe, said:
'I am delighted that the Arts Council has recognised the school's
commitment to developing an arts education programme which is a
key element of the broad and balanced curriculum offered to all
Priesthorpe pupils.
'There is a huge amount of arts activity going on in the school.
For example, today we are running a photography masterclass for
talented art pupils, not only from Priesthorpe, but from other secondary
schools in this area of the city, and this weekend the school concert
band and dohl drum group are playing for the public in Canal Gardens
park.
'I would like to thank all the arts staff for their hard work in
achieving this award!'
Sir Christopher Frayling, Arts Council England Chair, said:
'It is very encouraging to see so many schools showing such dedication
to the teaching and learning of the arts. Enhancing opportunities
for young people to engage with and practise the arts is a key priority
for the Arts Council, and one of our strongest pledges for the future.
My warm congratulations to all those who have achieved a richly-deserved
Artsmark award this year.'
