If you want to know what you have to do to improve your level, read the descriptors below.

Speaking and Listening

  • You can attain Level 3 if you can:

    talk and listen confidently in different situations and explain your ideas;

    understand the main points in discussion work;

    vary the detail that you go into.

  • You can attain Level 4 if you can:

    talk and listen confidently in an increasing number of situations;

    adapt your style of talking depending on the situation, and develop ideas;

    describe events and express your opinions clearly.

  • You can attain Level 5 if you can:

    talk and listen confidently in a wide range of situations, including some formal ones;

    vary expression and choice of words to keep the interest of your listener.

    begin to use standard English in formal situations.

  • You can attain Level 6 if you can:

    adapt your talk to different situations with growing confidence.

    hold the interest of listeners by using a variety of vocabulary and expression.

    use standard English confidently in formal situations.

  • You can attain Level 7 if you can:

    adjust your style of speech to different situations confidently.

    choose your words precisely, and organise your talk so that you communicate clearly.

    Use standard English confidently in different situations that require it.

Writing

  • You can attain Level 3 if:

    your writing is often organised, imaginative and clear;

    you can use the main features of different types of writing, and you have started to adapt your writing to different readers;

    your handwriting style is joined up and clear.

  • You can attain Level 4 if:

    you can write in a lively and thoughtful way in a variety of styles;

    you can develop your ideas and organise them to suit the reader and the purpose you are writing for;

    your handwriting is fluent, joined up and clear.

  • You can attain Level 5 if:

    your writing is varied and interesting and you can express meaning clearly in a variety of styles for different readers;

    you can use a formal style when needed;

    your choice of words is imaginative and you use words precisely;

    your handwriting is clear, joined up and fluent., and you can adapt it to different tasks.

  • You can attain Level 6 if:

    your writing often involves and keeps the readers interest, and you show some ability to adapt your written style in different ways, including an impersonal style;

    you can use a variety of sentence structures and words to create certain effects;

    your handwriting is neat and legible.

  • You can attain Level 7 if:

    your writing shows confidence and ability to choose different styles;

    you can develop characters and settings in narrative writing;

    you can use paragraphing and correct punctuation, to make sequences of events, or ideas, clear to the reader.
