Business Studies GCSE AVCE AS/A2 Young Enterprise Staff

AS/A2 Economics and Business

Students follow the Nuffield syllabus to AS and A2 level. This course covers Economics and Business Studies theory in a way which relates to the real world. Students are encouraged to develop their understanding of current affairs and world events through the ideas we explore.

The course is modular.
At AS level, students investigate:
(a) 'objectives' from various perspectives - individual, business and government;
(b) 'efficiency' which examines contemporary ideas on business effectiveness and raises questions about the market system;
(c) 'change' looks at the dynamic nature of the business environment and the responses of individuals, goals and businesses.

At A2 level, students examine:
(a) 'competitiveness' which looks at the ways in which businesses behave in order to gain and maintain an advantage over rivals;
(b) 'What is the Global future?' examines the economic background to globalisation and discusses the ethics of a global economy;
(c) 'Can there be certainty?' looks at the role of data in existing business decisions in an ever-changing world.

A student's grade consists of 15% coursework for A/S and 15% for A2. Students are encouraged to devise their own topics for investigation, drawing, as far as possible, on their own experiences.

Unit 4 is a 'pre-seen' case study exam. This means that students are presented with some information before the exam. This year the focus was on the take over of Bass brewers by Interbrew.
